Changes to how patients pick-up intravenous (IV) iron medication

Hamilton Health Sciences is changing the way patients pay for their intravenous (IV) iron therapy and how the drug is brought to the clinic.

Starting Nov 21st, patients will need to go to the hospital drug store (pharmacy) 30 minutes before their infusion appointment to pick up their dose of IV iron medication. Patients will need to bring it with them to their appointment.

We are making these changes to adhere to common practices being implemented across all other hospitals in the Hamilton area and elsewhere. This change affects all patients currently on IV iron therapy and all new patients who will be prescribed this medication.

All current patients will receive a phone call from the Drug Access Facilitator to explain the new process and drug coverage details. At each appointment, the HHS team including the Physicians, Nurses and Drug Access Facilitator will ensure patients receiving the iron therapy also understand the new medication pick-up process.
