Respiratory Therapy Services at Hamilton Health Sciences - We are committed to:

  • Quality Respiratory Services
  • Teaching, Mentoring and Research
  • Quality work life for all staff

Student (SRT), Graduate (GRT), and Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRT's) work on interprofessional healthcare teams to collaborate on the best practices and care they provide each and every day.  Respiratory Therapists at Hamilton Health Sciences are typically seen handling emergencies or providing care in critical situations, and offer a unique and multi-faceted service delivery model in healthcare.  The majority of therapists work in various levels of critical care (Intensive Care Units and Emergency Rooms) with Adult, Paediatric and/or Neonatal patients, but we do have some unique roles at Hamilton Health Sciences, ranging from Clinical Outreach Specialist to Interprofessional Chief to hospital President!

Thousands of Canadians suffer from various forms of Cardio-Respiratory disorders or diseases. Respiratory Therapists are often the first care providers involved in their  treatment, diagnosis and health education. We hold integral roles as airway managers.  Respiratory Therapists are involved in the care of patients suffering from illnesses such as: Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis, Emphysema, Pneumonia, Congestive Heart Failure, Traumas, Strokes, Smoke Inhalation, and Cancer.  We provide support in high-risk deliveries and help babaies who have trouble breathing, or have congenital heart defects.  We also work in the Operating Room, Pulmonary Diagnostics, Rehabilitation, Smoking Cessation, HomeCare, Hyperbaric Chambers, Research, Education and Medical Sales.

The Respiratory Therapy profession in Canada was established in the early 1960's with the extensive utilization of Mechanical Ventilators and Medical Gases in Hospital settings. Over fifty years later there are approximately 7000 RRT's working in Canada with just over 3000 Respiratory Therapists in Ontario alone!

Hamilton Health Sciences employs approximately 155 Respiratory Therapists.
