HAMILTON: A $5 million transformational gift from Ron Joyce and The Joyce Foundation will complete the Enabling Dreams campaign to equip the new Children’s Health Centre currently under construction. In announcing the gift, Pearl F. Veenema, President and CEO, Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation indicated that “in honour of Mr. Joyce’s tremendous gift, the new Children’s Health Centre will be named the Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre. In renaming the new Centre we are honouring Mr. Joyce and ensuring a lasting legacy that celebrates his long-standing commitment to the health and well-being of the children in this region”.

“We are extremely grateful for this wonderful gift and are so very appreciative for the commitment and confidence in Hamilton Health Sciences that it demonstrates,” said Rob MacIsaac, President and CEO Hamilton Health Sciences. “Ron Joyce is an incredible entrepreneur and unwavering philanthropist whose work has had a tremendous impact on our community and country. We are privileged to count him amongst our strongest supporters,” continued Mr. MacIsaac.

In announcing the gift, Mr. Joyce said that “it was an easy decision for me to support the children, as they have always been close to my heart. The team at McMaster Children’s Hospital are so dedicated that I am pleased to be able to support the thousands of children who need their care and expertise. It is a privilege for The Joyce Foundation to support this transformational investment in our children’s future”.

When the new Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre opens in the fall of 2015, it will be the only centre of its kind in Canada offering this breadth and combination of services for the children and youth of this region. It will be home to the Autism Spectrum Disorder Service, Developmental Pediatrics and Rehabilitation Program, Child and Youth Outpatient Mental Health Program and the Prosthetics and Orthotics Service where more than 70,000 patient visits are expected each year. “This new purpose-built facility is designed to meet the specialized needs of children with physical, mental and developmental challenges, and provides a warm, family-centred environment”, said Dr. Peter Fitzgerald, President McMaster Children’s Hospital.

The four-storey Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre is being built on Wellington Street across from the Regional Rehabilitation Centre. The construction of the new Centre is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services and is a joint project with Infrastructure Ontario. The new Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre is an integral part of McMaster Children’s Hospital and when open will complete the transfer of these programs from the Chedoke facility.

“Over the years, Mr. Joyce has demonstrated a strong interest in the health and well-being of the children who are cared for by McMaster Children’s Hospital at its two current locations. His tremendous generosity enables both the completion of the Enabling Dreams campaign and the immediate purchase of a much-needed CT Scanner. As a leader in pediatric rehabilitation, the new Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre will include a state-of-the-art Motion Lab that will be used to assess and document gait disorders for children and youth. This information can then be used to make decisions about exercises and braces and can be instrumental in tailoring treatment,” continued Dr. Fitzgerald.
