Hamilton Health Sciences & Foundation present Cornerstone Awards to outstanding contributors to health care

Media Release
April 22, 2009
Hamilton, ON – Three Cornerstone Awards were presented at the 16th Annual Cornerstone Awards Ceremony at the Art Gallery of Hamilton on April 22, 2009. This year’s recipients are: Drs. Ronald Barr and Mohan Pai; Shirley Elford; and Highland Secondary School.
Cornerstone Awards are presented annually to those community or staff members who have made a significant contribution to health care at Hamilton Health Sciences and who embody the hospital’s values of respect, caring, innovation and accountability. They are individuals who give freely of their time and display great leadership. They are shining stars who go above and beyond to enable a healthier, stronger community.
Dr. Ronald Barr and Dr. Mohan Pai, two Hamilton Health Sciences physicians who are co-recipients of one award, have careers spanning more than three decades. They have helped to build a world-class pediatric hematology/oncology program at McMaster Children's Hospital. At the same time, they have led research and advocacy initiatives that have impacted patient care practices far beyond Hamilton.

As an artist, Shirley Elford has shared her talents with Hamilton Health Sciences by creating and donating handcrafted glass awards, including the annual Cornerstone Awards. But her art is only one dimension of Shirley's dedication to Hamilton Health Sciences. As a volunteer, she has been a board member, event organizer and ambassador. Over the years, she has contributed to the success of Hamilton Health Sciences’ “Mend a Broken Heart” campaign, annual Research Gala and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The students and teachers at Highland Secondary School have demonstrated incredible commitment to health care through their participation in a variety of special events and programs. These Dundas students have fundraised for McMaster Children's Hospital and the teachers have donated their time and talent to create scenarios that are used by McMaster's medical school. “It is a great honour to not only recognize these individuals within the hospital and within the community, but it is also a reminder that superior individuals, just like the ones we are celebrating tonight, make Hamilton Health Sciences stand out as a centre of excellence,” said Barbara Sullivan, Chair of the Hamilton Health Sciences Board of Directors.
